I was supposed to write about this trip one week ago…but who cares! As long as I jot the memory down! *evil grin*
A gang of us (Sucker, Devil, WW, JalanKayu and I) boarded KTM on Sat morning to Segamat - segnick’s hometown. Our sole purpose was to eat, eat and eat! Was brewing this idea of visiting his hometown long long time ago when segnick mentioned that his family had a durian orchard. We immediately jumped at the chance when he told us that it’s DURIAN season!
It took us about 3 hours to reach. Throughout the journey, I totally defeated my purpose of sitting beside the window because I dozed off. Hoho…
Segnick was there to pick us up when we reached. The first stop we went to was the chicken & char siew rice stall. It was OK, not that fantastic. But we devoured everything because we were super hungry!
After that, we went to eat ‘ais chendol’ and ‘goreng pisang’. If you have noticed (or haven’t), the colour of the chendol is different from what we have in Singapore. It is NATURAL pandan green, not some fluorescent green. This is what I can’t get used to even after 6 years in Singapore. The ‘pisang goreng’ came with a spicy sauce. I slightly remembered the taste because my aunty used to make it when she ate fruits. Her version is made of light soya sauce, sugar and chilli.
We went back home to settle down. And was greeted by loads of fruits! Durian, longan and watermelon! The guys started to eat durians after a short rest. I could hear their satisifaction and delightfulness when segnick’s mother opened one durian after another.
As a Rafflesian, how can we not have tea?! At around 5pm, we went out again to a coffee shop. According to segnick, they brewed the best coffee in Segamat. True to his words, it was very crowded. We ordered boiled eggs, kaya toasts and coffees. The coffee tasted a bit sour on top of its richness; the toasts were tasty; the eggs were timed nicely before served.

At night, we went to eat ‘zhi char’. We tried the Malaysia-style-Hokkien-mee (with black soya sauce) and the famous cuttlefish in satay sauce with fried yam. We all ate to our heart’s content, no doubt, because it is cheap and tasty. Even I was surprised by the price after conversion! (about $5 per person, with 6 dishes). And the night ended with us lazing in segnick’s house watching tv and stoning.
We woke up with breakfast ready in the kitchen. It was wanton mee! Yummy mee and wantons with green chilli! After that, we went out to shop a while before stopping at a bak kut teh shop for lunch. The herbal soup tasted nice. I especially like the taufu dipped in the soup. Heavenly! We ordered ‘otak-otak’ for JalanKayu’s sake too. And it was superb! Soft and really tasted like fish!
We took the 5pm train back to Singapore. It was delayed for one hour and it was almost midnight when I reached home. Indeed, this trip was a tiring one. But it was worth going because of the food!
When can we have an Ipoh food trip? *grin*
